Today’s Garden Twenty: Starting Seed and a Bit of Raking

Our neighbor gave us a big bag of seeds that she bought last year. They are all from Botanical Interests and most of the packages are certified organic. She had picked them up at the end of the season quite cheaply. 6 Garden Regrets that I’m not Fretting Too Much About

I experience the garden as a great place of forgiveness and opportunities for second chances. If I forget to plant cool weather crops in the spring, I have another chance in the fall. If I neglect to clear the beds in the fall (which I did!) they’ll still be there ready to be cleared out in the spring. Today’s Garden Twenty: Raking, Waking and Shopping

Twenty minutes isn’t much time… which is a great thing! Today it was just enough time to:

  • admire the snowdrops that are blooming in the lilac bed;
  • rake the mulch away from the asparagus so the sun can start stirring them to action;

    Project Vineyard: Free Grape Cuttings

    We’ve mostly used our local “free-cycle” mailing list to discard no longer needed items. Similar lists serve various parts of North America at least, the most famous of which is craigslist. What we like about “free-cycle” is that everything is exchanged for free. Last month an ad came up for free grape cuttings suitable for crafts or propagation. This opportunity seemed something we couldn’t pass up, even though we have little experience with propagating cuttings. [Read more →]

    There are so many items that can be composted that you’d think compost bins all over would be bulging with stuff-turning-to-rich-organic-soil. (And they most certainly could!)
